Electrotherapy
These various modalities use electric current to achieve therapeutic goals. They may be used adjunctively with other therapeutic techniques as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
Interferential Current (IFC) / Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
IFC and TENS machines use electrical current to modulate pain. They produce a buzzing/tingling sensation in the area of injury and may or may not produce a muscular contraction. This sensation helps to block the sensation of pain and provide relief.
Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS)
EMS therapy uses electrical current to stimulate the production of a muscular contraction. This type of therapy is often used during a functional activity or exercise. EMS is used for muscle strengthening, motor re-education, muscle spasm reduction, and edema reduction.
