Headaches

Background Information

Headaches can cause pain anywhere in the head and can radiate into the eyes or ears. There are many different types of headaches, and many different causes. Often, headaches are due to tension in the neck region caused by physical or emotional stress. The muscles and joints at the base of the head may be responsible for referring pain into the head region. This is because some of the nerves at the base of the neck travel into the head and face.

Common Symptoms

If your headaches increase with certain positions or postures, or eased by applying pressure at the base of the head, it is possible that pathologies of the neck may be responsible for the problem. Other common symptoms include pain above the eyebrows and pain on both sides of the head. Tension headaches are not typically associated with auras, nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. Your clinician at Huronia Physiotherapy and Chiropractic will be able to accurately assess and diagnose whether your neck is causing your headache.

Note: If you suffer from frequent headaches, it is always recommended to make an appointment with your family doctor to clear any concerning underlying causes.
