Lymphatic Drainage Massage
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels that carries fluids from the body back towards the heart. When there is an accumulation of lymphatic fluids in these vessels, people experience edema or swelling. Massage therapists use lymphatic drainage techniques to decrease swelling in areas where lymph has accumulated. Broad, gentle strokes are used to promote fluid removal and increase circulation throughout the lymphatic system. This type of massage may be especially effective in people who have fluid retention in their limbs, or in those who have undergone surgeries that affect the lymphatic system, such as a mastectomy.
