Vertigo
What is vertigo?
Vertigo is typically described as dizziness or the sensation of spinning in any direction. One of the most common types of vertigo is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, which is caused by a dysfunction of the balance organs found in the inner ear.
The inner ear contains structures called the “semicircular canals”, which are filled with fluid and help the brain understand the orientation of the head in space. In BPPV, small calcium carbonate crystals get caught in the semicircular canals, which interferes with movements of the inner ear fluid. This causes the brain to falsely interpret information about the head’s movement and position, resulting in the experience of dizziness.
Common Symptoms
-
- Sudden, severe dizziness
- Symptoms that correlate with certain head positions
- A floating sensation
- Short episodes (lasting fewer than 30 seconds)
Treatment Strategies
In order to receive the best treatment for BPPV, book a physiotherapy or chiropractic appointment with one of our skilled clinicians. At Huronia, many of our physiotherapists have received specialized training in vestibular rehabilitation.
BPPV is treated using specific positioning techniques that dislodge crystals from the semicircular canals. Repositioning procedures used to treat BPPV provide fast and long-lasting relief of vertigo within the first few treatment sessions. This treatment protocol may be paired with vestibular rehabilitation exercises and/or falls prevention training.
